October has been quite the month for new patterns! First we had Chelsea, then Kourtney, and now Darcey! and Darcey is here just in time for sweater weather! It has been fall here in Minnesota for a while now but honestly sweater weather lasts a good nine months out of the year for me, and I can never get enough sweaters. Ever. Especially neutral ones that will go with everything. They’re my weakness… well neutral cardigans and cheese ravioli but we all have our faults right?
So needless to say when testing started for a new cardigan from Made for Mermaids, one of my favorite pattern deign companies, I went a little overboard, making three Darcey cardigans in just a couple of days. I was feeling a little extra adventurous and went out of my comfort zone with these babies (that’s also how I helped justify more cardigans for myself).
My first version I went right for the high-low version, made out of a think sweater knit from JoAnn Fabrics. This was the option I was least sure about int he pattern but it is actually my favorite cardigan I have ever made and it has been in steady rotation ever since it flew off my serger two weeks ago.
Then I just kept on with the dramatic option and went for a baby blue duster. This one is actually made out of $2 a yard sweater knit from Walmart that I have been keeping in my stash for a while to use as for a muslin of another project but I think it was actually perfect for this dramatic but oh so comfy duster cardigan.
This was the only version that I used a hood for as well and, although I will probably never wear the thing actually up on my head, I love how it makes the whole thing look so much more casual. Since the hood is so over sized it balances out the dramatic length of the duster option perfectly.
And then there is version three a tunic length out of the most amazing white modal french terry that I found at a local fabric warehouse. The unique feature for me on this one was the 3/4 sleeves. While 3/4 sleeves on tops and dresses is my default go-to I have never owned a cardigan with this length of sleeve and I will admit they made me a bit nervous. They are growing on me however and, since I have such short little arms, I am definitely liking not having all of the extra fabric in the way when I am sewing for cooking.
Its funny how the safest “risk” is the one I have the hardest time adjusting too but I am nothing if not a creature of habit!
