Made for Mermaids has been on a serious role lately! I shared last week how I have become obsessed with their Brenda top and the Ava tee is still my most made pattern of all time but there is a new pattern love in my life,t he Carli top!
This pattern is what Pinterest dreams are made of! It’s a dramatic crossover top that flatter a everybody I have seen it on! The pattern was intended to be reversible, with the crossover being able to go in the front or the back and has all of the usual sleeve and Neckline options expected in an M4M pattern.
The real gem however, is that there are two different variations of the cross over. The first is super simple, simply two pieces layer over top of each other, and the second, called the “twist back” is a bit more technical and involves attaching the two layers in a super unique way. I have made both variations and have had great success with a wide variety of fabrics.
The first one I made was a short sleeve twist back in a very light rayon spandex from Bow Button Fabrics about two years ago. I love the drape of this one and how the high neck sits when I have the twist in the front.
The second variation was a long sleeve, scoop neck, twist back in a heavy weight rayon spandex. This one feels more oversized with the scoop neck and has a tendency to fall off the shoulder but it definitely the most flattering Carli I made up!
And for my third one I broke into a sweater knit I have been hoarding for a super long time and make a crossover variation with long sleeves and a high neck. I have been seeing tops just like this on Pinterest for years now and was so excited to finally recreate it! This is super comfy and I love that it gives me the chunky sweater knit look but in a silhouette that’s more flattering on my frame (we don’t need to add chunk over my already chunky upper body).
I have a few more Carlis already planned, including a few gym variations in a moisture wicking fabric, and I am so excited to get sewing. Are you picking up a copy of the new Carli pattern?! Let me know down below what fabrics your suing and what back variation speaks to you the most!
