This last week has been a mess and there really hasn’t been much time to sew in my life. Because of this I decided to do something a little different and participate in the Seamstress Tag. This set of questions was thought up by Hollie at Hollie sews and it has been spreading like crazy through the sewing community both on YouTube and on blogs. Since my blog is still new I think this is a great way for you all to get to know me a little better! If you participate in the seamstress tag I would love to see it!
Who are you?
My name is Nicki and I’m living in the middle of central Minnesota. Right now I am in my last semester of college and I will be graduating with both a Bachelor of Science in Community Health and a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies. Right now that’s taking up a big chunk of my time and feels like it is my whole life!
When and why did you start sewing?
I don’t remember for sure when I started sewing but it was in late middle school or early high school. My mom and I shared a spare bedroom turned craft room in the basement of our house. Mostly I started with small projects, zippered pouches, key fobs, simple bags, and other things of that nature, but I also made a few quilts during that time. Then life got crazy, I started college, eventually moved away from home, and into a tiny dorm with no room for a sewing machine, I joined a sorority, decided to double major while still working part time, and my love of making things just fell to the side.
I picked it up again when I moved into an apartment with my Fiancé about six months back and have become obsessed once again. I wanted to make throw pillows and a custom table cloth to match our apartment décor and I haven’t stopped craving sewing since!
What is your favorite or proudest make?
Right now my favorite make is my quilt block throw pillow. I love the colors of it, the geometric patterns, the shape, and the overall feel of it. It was my attempt at getting back into quilting when I picked up sewing again and I just cant get over it.’
If you would have asked me the same question when I first started sewing I probably would have told you my braided purse which was one of the first things I ever designed by myself and I eventually turned into a free pattern that is available in my Craftsy shop.
What is your most disastrous make?
It has got to be a chevron quilt that I made back in the day. At the time I was so proud of it but now I look back at it and realize I still had so much to learn! The points are all wonky, the colors I picked weren’t very inspiring, and I am sure that I rushed through it way too much for it to have been salvageable. It did nave a pink and brown cat print flannel backing that I still very much enjoy however so it wasn’t all bad!
Where is your favorite place to go fabric shopping?
Where I am living right now we have quite a few options for fabrics but none of them carry the newest modern lines and prints. I avoid the local quilt shops for the most part because as a young sewer I also feel out of place and slightly patronized there which can be very disheartening. I and up getting a lot of fabric from JoAnne Fabric’s and a plethora of online stores. My favorites online are Girl Charlee UK, Lakes Makerie, Hawthorne Threads, and Connecting Threads.
What is your most used pattern?
The divided basket pattern from Noodle head no doubt! I have this simple, functional baskets all over the apartment and I love giving them for gifts as well! I don’t really have a multi used clothing pattern yet but hopefully I will soon!
Your most dreaded sewing task is…?
Cutting out tiny little pieces, especially if they are repetitive! It feels like a never-ending task and I get so bored so quickly that I end up taking a lot of breaks in between cutting out pieces and it ends up taking much longer than it really needs too..
And your favorite sewing task?
Pressing! I am not sure that it is but I really love pressing seams. I get so much satisfaction and happiness from a crisp, well sewn seam. I also love photographing my work when it is done. I love being able to style what I just spent so long making in pretty ways and being able to show it off to its true potential!
What is your favorite sewing entertainment?
We don’t have cable so I live by Netflix. What I have on depends on what project I am working on though. If its something complicated that I need to focus on then I probably have Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, or something else that I have seen a hundred times and don’t really need to focus on to understand on. If I am doing something mindless like cutting hundred of triangles, binding a quilt, or ripping out seams than I will have some sort of documentary on. I love to be able to learn something while I am sewing as well!
Printed or PDF?
I know its controversial but I prefer PDF patterns! Maybe it’s the millennial in my but I would much rather store and organize a bunch of patterns virtually than in my craft room. Plus I find myself being much more drawn to indie patterns than the traditional ones found in chain fabric store sand its usually cheaper and quicker to get those online.
What sewing machine do you use?
I have a fairly old Singer Curvy sewing machine. Its not the fanciest but it does have some decorative stitches and it gets the job done, someday I would love to upgrade but until that’s in the budget me and my trusty curvy will keep sewing along!
Do you have any other hobbies?
Is sleeping a hobby? How about compulsively eating barbecue flavored lays potato chips?? I’m just kidding but I do love both of those things! Besides sewing I also love crocheting and making home décor, things like painted canvases, floral arranging, and the like. I also really love applying, styling, and collecting makeup. Its an odd hobby but it brings me so much joy and is something I can quickly and easily share with others when I do their makeup for a night out or just for fun. Basically I just love to be creating something, no matter how I am doing it!
